Community Safety FAQ's

Answer: The use of CCTV for domestic security purposes is exempt from the Data Protection Act therefore you are allowed to install CCTV to protect homes from burglary and your motor vehicles from criminal attack.   The cameras should only be used to monitor incidents of crime and are allowed to cover the area surrounding your property including the public footpath and road area.   If the cameras also monitor any private areas such as neighbours' gardens then it is advisable to consult with your neighbour with regard to this and explain the purpose of the camera.  It would be recommended for cameras not to monitor the private areas of neighbours' premises such as rear gardens where a greater degree of privacy would be desired.
