Safer Hartlepool Partnership

Domestic violence

The Partnership launched a strategy in 2007 that aims to reduce the number of incidents of domestic violence whilst providing support to people affected by it.

It is estimated that one in four women and one in six men will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime.

Work to improve levels of domestic violence has changed dramatically over the years and there is now support available for the perpetrator to get to the root cause of the problem and also for victims who wish to stay with their partner.

There are also stronger working links with the various agencies, which has seen a major u-turn in the way domestic violence incidents are responded to.

The Government defines domestic violence as:

““Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.”

What the partnership aims to do about domestic violence

•    Reduce domestic violence in the town using prevention and education.
•    Support victims and improve access to domestic violence services in Hartlepool.
•    Increase detections and positive enforcement actions
•    Enhance co-ordination and multi-agency structures.
•    Develop methods of data collection and information sharing.

How the partnership is going to achieve these objectives?

The Strategy contains a comprehensive list of ways in which various agencies will contribute to achieving the objectives.
